I began the project by keeping the receipts of every shopping trip I took within the 5 week period. I meticulously logged different points of data including the store information, location, money and time spent, and every single item purchased.
For some, grocery shopping is a nuisance, a chore, an undesirable obstacle through aisles of colorful packaged junk. For me, it’s a hobby, a pastime, a true joy and passion in which I find solace. I decided to record and track my grocery shopping trips over the course of 5 weeks to discover insights about my shopping trips.
Key Objectives:
1. / How much am I spending? I primarily opt for freshness and taste instead of price point when looking at items.
2. / What group of foods do I typically spend more on? (i.e. when should I stop my addiction to Hot Cheetos?)
3. / How much time am I actually spending grocery shopping (and when would this become a problem)?
Ideas for various types of visualization charts and maps to showcase my data.
Upon completion of this project, my key takeaways were that I spend an inordinate amount of time grocery shopping throughout the week. I'm also not limited to location and will traverse the city for my groceries. Ultimately, while I don't think seeing visuals of my shopping obsession will deter me from the frequency of my future trips, this project has encouraged me to think more intentionally about what I'm spending on. Perhaps the next chapter of my data visualization will track food waste and the unused items sitting in my pantry :)
